Following on from my previous review of the AV920 video eyewear, I am pleased to be able to report that Vuzix are adding to their line-up of products with the release of the AV310 widescreen and AV230XL products.

Key specs of each product are:

  • AV310 widescreen – widescreen QVGA displays, 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • AV230XL – OLED displays (as oppose to LCD) – meaning super-bright images

Both headsets share in common the fact they are powered by one AA battery, and come with a variety of cables for connecting to different devices (including Nokias, iPhones – actually most devices with a TV-Out!). They also both give the effect of watching a huge Plasma screen from not far away – something ranging between 44 and 52 inches, depending on the model you choose.

I wonder if this is actually the way that video-viewing on devices is going to go – I watched Vantage Point (rented through iTunes, GREAT film!) on my iPhone the other night in bed, and the experience was very enjoyable – apart from that of having to hold the iPhone for nearly two hours! I would have loved to have had a pair of these video glasses handy at the time!!

The AV310 will retail at about £150, and the AV230XL £130, but only up until Christmas apparently – so I’d get in there now and get a few pairs as gifts, or for yourself!

Visit Vuzix’s website here for more info on them. If I can get either one of these pairs of eyewear for review, I’ll post something more detailed up about exactly how they perform – personally I can’t wait to get hold of the OLED display glasses, since I’ve heard VERY good things about them!
