McAfee today announced Mobile Security 2.0, a new version of its protection software for smartphones and tablets. The security company’s new app will work for Android, BlackBerry OS and Symbian OS. Mobile Security 2.0 has a feature called App Alert, which help protect users from malicious apps that abuse personal information.
The feature specifically checks whether a downloaded app requests access to personal information including contacts, and warns the user. What users can also expect is: antivirus and anti-theft services, web and app protection, call and SMS filtering, online device management and uninstall protection, and protection from potentially unwanted programs. McAfee claims that a future version will also be able to check the reputation of the app developer, which is key for those who are uneducated toward taking the proper security measures.
McAfee believes that the biggest security issue for users isn’t protection against viruses but privacy, the same sentiment was shared by analyst Geoff Blaber of CCS Insight.
“We have been talking about viruses on mobiles for years, but we are yet to get to the point were there has been a piece of malware that has really hit phones.”
This is pretty cool that McAfee is stepping up its efforts in protecting people’s privacy, and being able to do things like remotely wipe data off your phone and the removable memory card is a huge plus.
