Canada’s public broadcaster CBC is launching its own iPhone app, providing users with instant access to 40 unique music streams and 13 “distinct musical genres.” Let’s face it, that’s like nothing, but since restrictive copyright and licensing laws prevented Canadians from using services like Pandora and Spotify, this is good news.
That said, alongside the iOS app, CBC has also launched a music portal with live and commercial-free radio streams, featuring a vast collection of Canadian artists on demand. Listeners can choose from the specialty content like live concerts from Deadmau5 and a Whitney Houston tribute, while also being able to find out what other listeners are jamming to.
As I said, this is a step in the right direction and what I’m sure our Canadian friends would like to see next are more stations added to the app, as well as the version for Android smartphones and tablets.
