T-Mobile’s $200 HTC One S might not be your best option right now

The very sleek new HTC One S is now available on T-Mobile for $199 with a two-year contract and it’s very nice, but — how can I put this delicately? —  you might want to wait a few weeks before buying it. If you hold off just a little longer, you’ll probably end up better off with one of this year’s most hyped smartphones to date: the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Don’t get me wrong, the HTC One S is pretty sweet. It has a gorgeous design made with premium materials, as we’ve come to expect from HTC. It’s also compatible with T-Mobile’s 4G network, runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, has Beats Audio, a speedy 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a plentiful display, a quality camera and, well, you get the picture.

The problem isn’t the phone itself, it’s the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S III, which is expected to be a considerably better phone, will be in stores presumably by the end of May. Even better, there’s a good chance it will be on T-Mobile just like the One S. It’s rumored to have a quad-core processor and one of those gigantic displays that just keep getting bigger and bigger on Android devices. Samsung probably won’t disappoint, since it’s the only manufacturer to stand out from the crowd of green bots in competing with Apple.

Don’t take it personally, HTC. I know you were hoping for success with the One S and One X because of those embarrassing quarterly results. Maybe later on this year you can make your comeback.
