At the 2012 NCTA Cable show that kicked off yesterday in Boston, TiVo announced a new device that will transcode your content for viewing on iPhone and iPad devices. The TiVo stream will be available for purchase later this summer, and connects to a TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q DVR and delivers that content to tablets and mobile devices.
TiVo generically references tablets and mobile devices, but specifically names the iPhone and iPad, suggesting the product will first be made available for iOS devices, and will likely find its way to Android sometime afterwards. The TiVo stream allows you to stream and/or download shows on your iOS devices at the same time without interrupting what’s playing on the TV. You will be able to choose whether you want to stream or download content, with the latter providing offline viewing on your mobile devices, perfect for WiFi-only iPads.
Though TiVo holds several patents that essentially ensure the company has little competition, sales of TiVo devices have been less than stellar for the company. That sad, we have to wonder how many of you readers out there have TiVo-branded devices as opposed to those offered by a cable company. Anyone out there rocking a TiVo and looking forward to having your TV content readily available on your iPad or iPhone devices? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
