When Asus first announced the Padfone, most of us were amazed. The idea to make a single device that’s both a smartphone and tablet is great, or at least I think so. Then at Mobile World Congress, the company went one step forward, unveiling the keyboard dock and the super-cool Bluetooth headset-stylus. The problem, however, is that the Padfone is still not widely available, quite the contrary. And when it finally hits the major markets of Europe, Asia and North America, most people will already have some other device like the HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S III, both of which are more powerful than Padfone’s “phone part,” boasting bigger and better screens (and arguably faster processors, though that’s not the case with LTE-enabled versions of the two phones). In other words, Asus needs to revamp some things to make the Padfone 2 a successful product.
First of all, it needs to cut the period between announcement and launch. People don’t want to wait for a whole year to be able to get some device after it’s been announced. Then, it should change the specs of the phone – three things instantly come to mind:
- Asus Padfone needs to have a bigger 720p HD screen (maybe even 1080p if it emerges as a standard for high-end phones)
- The tablet should provide higher resolution of 1920×1200 pixels
- It must have a quad-core processor to make things running smoothly
As I said, I love the idea of having one device instead of two (or three?), but as a true geek, I want a high-end phone. And since Padfone won’t be an affordable product, it must meet the high-end specs. Otherwise, not many folks will want it – for one thing, I used to want it and now I’m not that interested.
Now I’m eager to hear what you think about it? Is there something I missed? What specs do you expect to see in the Padfone 2? Comment form is all yours…
