Leap revamps mobile broadband plans, introduces $30 per month option

Leap Wireless revamped its mobile broadband plans. The changes go into effect immediately and provide some extra data for high-end users who require heavy usage per month and adds a cheaper data plan for customers on the low-end of the usage scale.

Starting from the top and working our way down, the Cricket provider is slightly modifying its $65 per month broadband plan. It previously gave users up to 7.5GB of data and that’s getting a small boost to the full 8GB because why the hell not? It’s not a whole lot more but at least the price didn’t go up. Plus, it’ll help out customers who were just tipping the scale over 7.5GB before.

Next, Leap is replacing its mid-range and low-end plans, which were $50 per month for 5GB of data and $45 per month for 2.5GB, which didn’t make sense at all because for an extra $5 per month you could double the amount of data access you had. Now the prices are more in proportion with the data. The middle plan drops to $45 and gives you 4GB of data and the brand new $30 per month plan supplies 2GB.

Leap says mobile broadband customers using any one of the new plans can expect download speeds of about 1.4 Mbps.

Current Analysis analyst Deepa Karthikeyan thinks Leap’s new competitive pricing strategy is a part of an effort to take back customers it lost to Virgin Mobile’s simple, affordable pricing structure. “Leap’s new portfolio offers cost-effective options and will now cater to a wider segment of users via plans that offer data speeds from 2 GB to 8 GB which should help the carrier regain its position as a leading prepaid broadband services provider,” she writes.
