According to a report from IHS Suppli, Samsung has climbed to the top of the mobile phone market, bumping Nokia out of the top spot for the first time in 14 years. Samsung has climbed to the top of the smartphone industry with its successful line of Galaxy devices, but this is the first time the Korean manufacturer has taken the top spot in the entire mobile phone category.
Much of this growth is due to the widespread adoption of smartphones and the decline of feature phones. Wayne Lam of IHS writes,
“Smartphones represent the fastest-growing segment of the cellphone market—and will account for nearly half of all wireless handset shipments for all of 2012. Samsung’s successes and Nokia’s struggles in the cellphone market this year were determined entirely by the two companies’ divergent fortunes in the smartphone sector.”
In IHS Suppli’s latest report, Samsung leads the pack in the smartphone arena with 28 percent of the market, while Nokia takes a precipitous fall, dropping from 16 percent to a meager 5 percent.
