Atmel and Corning are using CES to demonstrate Atmel XSense flexible sensor functionality on thin IT-sized and curved Corning Gorilla Glass form factors. This work promises to enable innovative and cost-effective capacitive touch modules, while ushering in a “new era of user interface designs.” Most notably, the flexible touch sensor allows capacitive touch to be wrapped around the side of a device, potentially eliminating the need for mechanical buttons.
The two companies are demoing both flat and curved samples of Corning Gorilla Glass to illustrate the compatibility of the Atmel XSense sensor with the industry’s standard chemically strengthened cover glass for touch-enabled displays.
And they already have a first client – ASUS, which will use the Atmel XSense touch sensor for a next-generation tablet scheduled to be released to the market later in this quarter. Can’t wait to see that baby in action. 😉
