NVIDIA is apparently working on a reference design for smartphones and tablets as part of the plan to expand its global footprint. Today’s mobile processor market is dominated by Qualcomm while few of the top handset makers like Apple, Samsung and Huawei design their own chips.

So what can NVIDIA do? Their Tegra 3 was the first ARM-based quad-core processor in the world and they did manage to convince few companies like HTC and ASUS to integrate it into their mobile devices. Today, the picture is completely different as most handset makers for Qualcomm’s chips, namely Snapdragon S4 Pro.

According to Mobile Review’s Eldar Murtazin, NVIDIA plans to keep fighting by releasing reference designs for smartphones and tablets, and pitch smaller (tier-two) players such as Lava and Micromax to make such devices. This in turn would enable more companies to release high-quality products, propelling NVIDIA’s market share to new highs. Or that at least is the plan, which will start unveiling at some point in May-June.

We like supporting the underdog and in the mobile chip design that would be NVIDIA. Can’t wait to see what they can accomplish. 😉
