Export Development Canada helps BlackBerry sell its phones to Telefónica

Export Development Canada (EDC) is providing 200 million EUR in working capital facility to Telefónica to facilitate the procurement of BlackBerry smartphones, services and solutions across its worldwide operations.

Telefónica is one of the largest mobile operator groups, with operations in 24 countries and some 315.7 million subscribers. EDC hopes that this money will help BlackBerry grow its market share across Telefónica’s markets.

This isn’t the first time EDC is assisting Telefónica though – it has been doing this since 2006, supporting various Canadian procurement needs along the way. However, this time it’s more important since BlackBerry is at a critical stage, hoping that its brand-new BlackBerry 10 platform will succeed. We’ll see whether this will help the Canadian company move enough z10 and Q10 units…
