Fujitsu and NTT DoCoMo have announced successful trials of LTE 4×4 MIMO – resulting in speeds of approximately 120Mbps! Say what?!
The testing took place in a “Special Ubiquitous Zone” (?), which correlates to an area of the Japanese city Sapporo. Fujitsu and DoCoMo have been working since 2006, producing base stations for LTE – and I presume DoCoMo have been fairly busy on the devices front too!
Interestingly, with an even further-interpolated version of the technology, they’ve managed to hit 300Mbps!
Apparently the testing was done in an urban environment (which is good, because it’s representative of the real-world) and confirmed 120Mbps was possible. Just to put that in perspective, it’s well over 30x as fast as 3.5G, and 2x as fast as Fibre. The results will be taken in to deliver further work on the LTE ecosystem development.
Just think, as and when this rolls out, I’ll be able to check my Facebook REALLY fast 😉
