PS3 Firmware Update 4.45 Finally Released – Special Instructions for Folks with Bricked PS3s

Well it took them a week, but Sony released its latest firmware update for the Playstation 3 in the wee hours of the morning today. Sony released the update, version 4.46, to fix a bug that caused problems for some console users who installed the previous version (4.45), breaking the system’s menu and making it effectively useless.

f you aren’t experiencing any problems so far, this is an update just like any other. Whether or not you’ve installed update 4.45, this new update (4.46) will install on your PS3 when you use the System Update utility. But if you’re one of the unlucky folks whose PS3 is bricked, it’s going to be a little more complicated for you.

The three-step process is explained in detail on the PlayStation Knowledge Center at Sony’s support site. For PS3 owners who installed last week’s update but can’t load the system’s XMB (Xross Media Bar), it’s a bit of a pain to update to version 4.46. Console owners will need to download the latest software update to a USB storage device (or depending on the model, another supported storage device), boot into “safe mode” on their PlayStation 3 and then install the update manually.

Be sure to click through to get the full instructions. Let’s all hope this doesn’t happen again. Or at least it doesn’t take Sony a week to deal with it when it does!
