At a recently ended Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel said that Apple won’t be the only company designing 64-bit mobile processors for long. The chip making giant said that the 64-bit Atom platform will be released in the first quarter of 2014, hinting us we’ll likely see these in action either at CES in Las Vegas or Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Intel will be pitching its Bay Trail platform that competes with ARM based mobile processors. Depending on the model, these chips sport either dual or quad cores SoCs, and the most powerful chip, the quad core Z3770, clocks at 2.4GHz while supporting screen resolutions of up to 2,560 x 1,600 pixels.
The whole Bay Trail Z3000 series is designed for tablets running Android or Windows 8.1, and we expect that the first devices rocking these chips will be unveiled by the end of the year.
Back to 64-bit computing. Aside from Intel, Samsung is also working on such CPUs and we expect these will be implemented in the next smartphone from the Galaxy S series. By that time Android will hopefully support 64-bit computing…
