Nokia Store will stop accepting apps for Symbian and MeeGo devices from January 1, 2014. The unfortunate part — which has something to do with the Microsoft deal — is that the Finnish company previously said it will support Symbian until 2016. Guess the new ownership structure changes many things…
Meanwhile, Nokia will keep supporting Windows Phone and Asha platforms, while Symbian and MeeGo content will remain in the Nokia Store… though developers will be unable to update their existing or add new apps.
In an email sent to developers, Nokia said it is “very excited about the opportunities available with Asha and Windows Phone,” but somehow we doubt those words will attract the critical mass of developers to the two platforms. To be fair, Windows Phone does have a future but going forward it will be Microsoft’s (rather than Nokia’s) job to attract key apps to the platform.
So as far as Nokia is concerned, the first day of next year will be the last one for Symbian, whereas MeeGo will continue to live on in the form of Jolla’s Sailfish OS. Every time we say goodbye, I die a little…
