Rogers first in Canada to support Google Play carrier billing

Rogers Wireless was the first Canadian carrier to support Play Store gift card redemption, and it is the first to offer Android-based carrier billing.

Canada’s largest network already supports carrier billing on BlackBerry and Windows Phone platforms, and now Android is joining the party, allowing users to buy an app, movie, magazine or book using their Rogers account.

In an email to sent to MobileSyrup few days ago, Rogers said the capability is now tested with select customers:

Today, Rogers is beginning to roll out carrier billing to the Google Play store to a select amount of Rogers customers. Customers will be able to access this as an alternative payment option when making a payment in Google Play. We expect this service to be available to all customers in the coming weeks.

It’s unclear when Bell and TELUS will start offering Google Play carrier billing but it’s clear they don’t want to be left out of the game that also increases their ARPUs…
