Xiaomi not only has some great phones offered at more than reasonable prices, but also an active community that keeps chipping in to improve the “Xiaomi experience.” This experience comes in the form of MIUI that includes a number of customizations built on top of the Android core.

The current MIUI 5.0 is based on Android 4.1 since the Chinese firm didn’t see enough improvements in Android 4.2 and 4.3 that are worth additional modifications to MIUI. It’s important to add here that MIUI alone includes a number of tweaks and Xiaomi phones come with preloaded software that make some of Google’s own improvements obsolete. Or at least that’s the way Xiaomi sees things.

Anyhow, some folks like the pure Android experience and one of them managed to port KitKat to Xiaomi Mi2, which is the company’s last year’s flagship device (not the current Mi3 model).

Like some other handset makers, Xiaomi provides kernel sources for its devices, the fact that helped the savvy hacker accomplish this…

The chances are you don’t own a Xiaomi phone, but as we’ve heard it, the company is preparing for global expansion and as far as we (don’t) know, their products could hit the Western hemisphere at some point next year. We’ll see how that goes…
