Facebook joins GSMA trade group

Facebook joined the GSMA in a move that could give it more voice in the mobile industry.

“Joining GSMA reflects our focus on mobile and our continued desire to work closely and collaboratively with partners in the industry, and we look forward to playing an active role as a member,” Dan Rose, vice president of partnerships at Facebook, said in a statement to FierceWireless.

The membership could also signal that Facebook will become more involved at Mobile World Congress, the premier mobile event taking place in Barcelona each year.

It is said that the main benefit of joining GSMA is the broad reach of GSMA and its members along with the wide organizational footprint. This in turn could help the social network reach even more users all around the world. In particular, they’re aiming for those who don’t necessarily have smartphones but would still want to access Facebook. We’ll see how that goes…
