Samsung announced two new chips – Exynos 5 Octa (5422) and Exynos 5 Hexa (5260). The first of the two will find its way to the latest Galaxy S5, with at least some versions sporting that SoC instead of the one made by Qualcomm. Chances are these will be non-LTE variants offered across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Similarly to its predecessor, the new octa-core processor comes with four Cortex-A15 cores clocked at up to 2.1GHz and four Cortex-A17 cores that have a clock speed of up to 1.5GHz. According to Samsung, the new Exynos 5 Octa delivers up to 34% improved performance over the previous models, featuring big.LITTLE HMP technology that combines all eight cores for a performance boost.

The other chip, Exynos 5 Hexa (5260), will debut with the recently announced Galaxy Note 3 Neo. This processor boasts two Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 1.7GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.3GHz. The Exynos 5 Hexa too supports HMP technology to take advantage of all six cores when needed, resulting in a 42% performance improvement over the previous Exynos dual-core processors.

Both chips support high resolution displays like QHD (2560 x 1440) and WQXGA (2560 x 1600), and come with proprietary mobile image compression (MIC) and adaptive hibernation technology. The Octa model can “handle” 4K video playback, while the Hexa is limited to full HD clips at up to 60fps.
