Sony won’t adopt Android Wear for smart watches *UPDATE: That could change in the future*

Sony won't adopt Android Wear for smart watches

Even though Sony was among the first handset makers to adopt Android, it decided to skip the Android Wear. Instead, it will keep using its own platform, which too is based on Android.

“We’ve already invested time and resources on this platform, and we will continue in that direction,” said Ravi Nookala, head of Sony Mobile’s US arm.

It makes sense to do this since Sony got a significant expertise while launching its smart watches. In fact, the latest SmartWatch 2 is the fourth generation of the firm’s smartphone companion device, and it’s getting better with the day.

Alas, it’s Pebble rather than Sony (and many other brands for that matter) that keeps getting all the attention. We do see room for improving Sony’s marketing as well as bringing many popular apps to the [smart watch] platform. Hopefully, these guys are reading blogs like ours and will do something about this soon… otherwise they could become irrelevant in the future…

UPDATE: Sony has changed its mind in the meantime, saying that it will “evaluate opportunities across a number of areas”, and who knows – perhaps launch an Android Wear device in the future. For the time being, it will keep using its own smart watch platform.
