Google has yet again released its report on active Android devices and their software versions. As one would expect, KitKat has continued to grow and now accounts for 5.3% of all devices accessing the Google Play Store. For those who count, that’s more than double the previous count when KitKat was running on just 2.5% of devices.
Android 4.x is still a leader with various Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean smartphones and tablets accounting for more than 80%. In comparison, Gingerbread is running on 17.8% (down from 19%), Froyo (Android 2.2) on 1.1%, and Honeycomb on just 0.1% devices.
The process of moving to newer versions of Android takes time and I’m afraid we’ll have to wait for another few months to see KitKat hitting the 10% mark. It’s not just handset makers to blame; carriers on their end require an additional layer of testing before offering some firmware to the general public…
