China’s largest telecom operator is making a big bet on artificial intelligence. China Telecom has launched nationwide trial AI token subscription plans, moving beyond traditional data services to offer computing power for AI applications.

The new offering represents a major shift in how telecom companies generate revenue. Instead of just selling mobile data and internet access, China Telecom is now positioning itself as an AI infrastructure provider, capitalizing on the growing demand for artificial intelligence services across China.

The subscription plans target different user segments with varying computing needs. For developers and small businesses, China Telecom offers three tiers:

  • Basic plan: 39.9 yuan ($5.50) monthly for 15 million tokens
  • Mid-tier option for expanded usage
  • Premium plan: 299.9 yuan ($41.50) monthly for 150 million tokens

Individual users and households get more affordable options. The entry-level plan costs just 9.9 yuan ($1.40) per month for 10 million tokens, while the top consumer package provides 80 million tokens for 49.9 yuan ($6.90) monthly.

Tokens serve as the basic currency for AI computing. These digital units measure how much processing power is needed to handle text, images, and commands in AI systems like chatbots and image generators. Think of tokens as the fuel that powers AI applications – the more complex the task, the more tokens required.

This move reflects China’s broader push into artificial intelligence infrastructure. The country has been investing heavily in AI development, with government backing for domestic large language models and computing networks. Chinese tech companies are racing to build AI capabilities that can compete with Western offerings like ChatGPT and Claude.

China Telecom’s entry into AI token subscriptions also signals how telecom operators worldwide are adapting to changing technology demands. Traditional voice and data services face increasing commoditization, pushing carriers to find new revenue streams. AI computing represents a potentially lucrative market as businesses across industries adopt AI tools.

The pricing strategy appears designed to encourage widespread adoption. At $1.40 for the basic consumer plan, China Telecom is making AI computing accessible to ordinary users, not just tech companies and developers. This democratization of AI access could accelerate adoption of AI applications in China’s consumer market.

Other Chinese telecom giants will likely watch this trial closely. If successful, similar token-based AI services could become standard offerings across the industry, fundamentally changing how telecom companies operate and compete.
