Google is bringing personality to home security with a new Pet Memory feature that teaches Nest cameras to recognize your furry family members by name. The update, which rolled out for early access users today, turns generic notifications like “a dog is walking in your kitchen” into personalized alerts such as “Fido is walking in the kitchen.”
The feature works through Google’s Ask Home voice assistant, powered by Gemini AI. Pet owners can simply tell their smart speakers their pet’s name and description, and the system remembers this information for future camera notifications and voice queries. Google says the feature requires the Advanced plan of Google Home Premium to function.
This Pet Memory addition represents Google’s latest push to make AI-powered home automation feel more natural and family-friendly. As smart home cameras become more common, generic motion alerts can quickly become noise. By personalizing these notifications with familiar names, Google is addressing a real pain point for pet owners who want to distinguish between their animals and actual security concerns.
The update also expands Ask Home voice functionality to all markets where Gemini for Home is supported. This means users in these countries can now ask their voice assistant questions using real-time information from smart home devices and Nest cameras:
- Australia
- Austria
- Belgium
- Canada
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany (newly added)
- Ireland
- Italy
- Japan
- Mexico
- Netherlands
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- United States
Germany is the newest addition to this list, with German language support now available in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany itself. The expansion shows Google’s commitment to making its AI home assistant globally accessible rather than keeping it limited to English-speaking markets.
For the pet recognition feature to work, users need indoor Nest cameras or select Gemini built-in cameras. Google claims the AI reduces misidentifications while providing more meaningful updates about pet activity throughout the home.
The timing of this update is significant as the smart home market becomes increasingly competitive. Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s HomeKit are also pushing into AI-powered home automation. Google’s focus on personalization could help differentiate its platform, especially for the millions of households with pets who want their security systems to be both smart and family-aware.
