Motorola’s new tablet has nine JBL speakers and a rotating ring stand

Nine speakers. In a tablet. That’s the pitch Motorola is making with the Moto Pad 70 Groove, and honestly, it’s hard not to pay attention. Most tablets treat audio as an afterthought. This one is making it the whole personality.

Motorola announced the Moto Pad 70 Groove alongside the new Razr+ smartphone, and while the Razr gets most of the headlines, this tablet might actually be the more interesting product. It’s aimed squarely at people who stream a lot, care about sound quality, or just want their tablet to fill a room. The partnership with JBL is doing the heavy lifting here, and the spec sheet backs it up.

The audio setup inside is genuinely impressive on paper. You get a 7.2-channel system pushing up to 48W of stereo output, with four tweeters handling high frequencies, three woofers covering bass and midrange, and two passive radiators adding an extra bass boost. There’s also a 43cc acoustic chamber built in, plus support for Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Audio, and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certifications. For a tablet, that’s a lot.

The hardware doesn’t stop at the speakers either. The Groove has a 12.1-inch display and a rotating ring on the back that doubles as a stand. It can also work as a Bluetooth speaker on its own, which is a nice touch if you want to leave it on a shelf and just play music without propping a screen up in your face.

But here’s where things get frustrating. The Moto Pad 70 Groove is launching exclusively in India, with availability on Flipkart starting August 6. Motorola is marketing it as India’s first tablet with a nine-JBL-speaker system, and for now, there’s no word on pricing or whether it’s coming anywhere else. If you’re in the US, you’re basically waiting with no confirmed timeline.

So what are your options right now? A few worth knowing about:

  • Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 ($349.99) has nine JBL speakers and a 12.1-inch screen with HDR10 support
  • Lenovo Tab Plus (first gen) has eight JBL speakers
  • JBL Playlist is a dedicated speaker with Google Chromecast support if you just want great audio for streaming

The Lenovo comparison is worth sitting with. If Motorola brings the Groove to the US and prices it near the Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2, it’ll be a direct fight between two nine-speaker, 12.1-inch tablets. That’s an interesting battle. But if Motorola prices it higher or takes too long to launch globally, the Lenovo option is already sitting on shelves right now.

There’s a real trend happening in the mid-to-high tablet space where audio quality is becoming a genuine selling point, not just a bullet point. Samsung, Lenovo, and now Motorola are all pushing harder on speaker quality because streaming is how most people use their tablets. A tablet with genuinely great speakers is a different product than one you plug headphones into. Motorola clearly understands that.

Still, until we know global pricing and availability, the Moto Pad 70 Groove is mostly a very exciting promise. The specs are there. The JBL brand adds real credibility. Now Motorola just needs to actually sell it to the rest of the world.
