Google hasn’t said a word about the Pixel Watch 5 officially, but the app on your phone might already know it exists. A tipster spotted the unannounced watch listed as a selectable device inside the Google Health app, complete with its own setup flow. That’s not a rumor from some shady parts list. That’s Google’s own software spilling the beans.
According to Android Authority, the tip came from @sameera_s_w on Telegram, who shared screenshots showing the Pixel Watch 5 sitting right at the top of the Health app’s device list. Tap it, and you get a dedicated setup page followed by a screen prompting you to connect the watch to Google Health. It’s a real setup flow, not just a string buried in an APK somewhere.
But before you get too excited about what the app reveals, pump the brakes. The Pixel Watch 5 and Pixel Watch 4 appear to share identical artwork in both the device list and the setup screens. Same images, same placeholder feel. Google almost certainly reused the Watch 4’s visuals because the actual Watch 5 design hasn’t been locked in for the app yet, or they just didn’t bother swapping it out ahead of launch. Either way, the setup text looks completely generic too, so there’s no hint of new features hiding in there.
Still, this kind of early app appearance is significant. Software doesn’t accidentally get updated to include an unannounced device unless that device is very close to shipping. Google is widely expected to officially launch the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, and this sighting lines up perfectly with that timeline. The watch is expected to come in two sizes: 41mm and 45mm, matching the options Google offered with the Watch 4.
What makes this worth paying attention to is the broader pattern. Google has been steadily building out its health and fitness ecosystem, and the Pixel Watch is central to that push. The Google Health app has become the hub for everything from heart rate data to sleep tracking, and tying a new watch tightly into that app from day one is clearly part of the strategy. Each Pixel Watch generation has added more sensors and tighter integration with Google’s health features, and the Watch 5 is expected to continue that trend.
The smartwatch market is also in an interesting spot right now. Apple dominates, Samsung holds a solid second position with the Galaxy Watch series, and Google is still working to carve out a meaningful share with Pixel Watch. The Watch 5 needs to bring something compelling, whether that’s better battery life, improved health sensors, or a more polished experience in the Health app, to give people a real reason to pick it over the competition.
For now, all we have is confirmation that the Pixel Watch 5 is real, it’s close, and Google’s own apps are already ready for it. August 12 can’t come fast enough.
