Poco M8x 5G is coming to India, and it looks like a budget 5G phone worth watching

Android 16 on a budget phone under Rs 20,000. That’s the headline detail buried in the latest leak around the Poco M8x 5G, and honestly, it’s the kind of thing that makes this more interesting than your typical mid-range announcement. Most phones at this price are still shipping on Android 14. If this checks out, Poco is about to look very good on paper.

According to Gadgets360, a tipster has leaked the key specs and expected pricing for the Poco M8x 5G ahead of its official India launch. The phone is confirmed to be coming, Poco has already set up a dedicated microsite on Flipkart, and the brand has been teasing the design for a bit now. So this isn’t a rumor out of nowhere. It’s filling in the blanks on something that’s clearly real and close.

Here’s what the leak says you’re getting with the Poco M8x 5G:

  • 6.9-inch IPS LCD display with HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate
  • MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor
  • 4GB RAM with 128GB storage, expandable via microSD
  • 6,000mAh battery with 33W wired charging
  • HyperOS 3 based on Android 16
  • Price expected under Rs 20,000

The Dimensity 6300 is a solid enough chip for everyday use and light gaming, though it’s not going to blow anyone away. It’s built for efficiency rather than raw power, which makes sense given the priority here is clearly that massive 6,000mAh battery. At 33W charging, you’re not topping up in a hurry, but a battery that size should easily last more than a day for most people. That’s a fair trade-off at this price point.

The HD+ screen resolution is the one thing I’d flag as a compromise. A 6.9-inch display at HD+ means you’ll notice the pixel density isn’t great if you’re coming from anything with a Full HD panel. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it is a choice. Poco is clearly pushing the battery and software story here rather than display quality.

Design-wise, the teasers show a green colorway with gold accents around the frame and camera island, a textured flat back panel, and a square camera module sitting in the top-left corner. It looks clean, maybe a little familiar, but solid for the segment. Power and volume buttons are on the right side of the frame.

What makes this launch matter beyond the specs is the software angle. Budget Android phones running the latest OS version out of the box is still not the norm, and Poco committing to HyperOS 3 on Android 16 here sets expectations around update longevity. Buyers in this segment often get left behind when it comes to software support. If Poco backs this up with a clear update promise, that’s a real selling point. Right now though, we’re still waiting on an official launch date, confirmed pricing, and the full spec sheet. More details should come out over the next few days.
