Most tablets try to replace your laptop. Xiaomi is taking a different angle with the Pad 9 Pro Max — it wants to plug into everything you already own. And that’s actually a more interesting pitch.
Xiaomi teased the Pad 9 Pro Max’s display ahead of its official launch at the company’s Autumn Flagship event on September 7 at 7 PM China time. The screen is a 13.3-inch panel with 3.4K resolution, a 3:2 aspect ratio, peak brightness of 1000 nits, and a color accuracy rating of ?E 0.47. That’s a solid spec sheet for a tablet display. The 3:2 ratio in particular is a smart call for anyone using this thing for work — it’s closer to a laptop screen than the stretched 16:10 panels you see on most Android tablets.
But the real story here is the USB-C port. Xiaomi is pushing hard on what it calls a “full-featured” USB-C connection that lets the tablet switch roles depending on what you plug it into. Connect it to a PC and it becomes a secondary touchscreen monitor. Pair it with a stylus and it turns into a digital drawing tablet. Hook up the Xiaomi Focus Pen Pro alongside a TourBox controller and you get two-handed creative input at once, which is genuinely useful for illustrators and designers who work that way.
Gamers also get something out of this. If you connect a compatible handheld that supports DisplayPort 1.2 or higher, the Pad 9 Pro Max works as an external display with stereo sound. So you’re not just stuck using this as a standalone tablet — it can slot into a bunch of different setups depending on what you need on any given day.
Under the hood, the Pad 9 Pro Max will be one of the first devices running Xiaomi’s new in-house Xring O3 chipset. It will also launch with HyperOS 4, which Xiaomi built with large-screen multitasking specifically in mind. A PC-style app interface is part of the package too, which should make the productivity angle feel less like a marketing claim and more like something you’d actually use.
This matters because the Android tablet market has been quietly getting more competitive. Apple’s iPad Pro still sets the bar, but Xiaomi, Samsung, and a few others are pushing harder on the “replace your laptop” or “extend your setup” angle. A tablet that genuinely works as a secondary monitor through USB-C, without needing extra software or proprietary dongles, is a real differentiator if Xiaomi executes it well. The key word there is “if.”
