iTunes will be used to activate the iPhone from home or officeApple, always the innovator, has announced that iPhone users can use iTunes to activate their new iPhone. The home activation process is something of a precedent for Apple and AT&T alike. By allowing users to activate their iPhone from the comfort of their home or office, Apple is redefining the phone-buying experience.

No more waiting at the store while a bumbling employee tries to get your phone registered with the carrier. No more hassling with said bumbling employee to transfer your old phone numbers to your new phone. Apple iTunes will walk you through a step-by-step process to do it all yourself!

“Users will be able to activate their new iPhone in the comfort and privacy of their own home or office, without having to wait in a store while their phone is activated,” said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. “There are tens of millions of people in the US who already know how to sync their iPods with iTunes, and syncing their new iPhone with iTunes works the same way.”

The process is as simple as connecting your iPhone to your computer (Mac or PC). Upon connecting your precious iPhone, the iTunes software will launch and automatically guide you through the activation procedure. If you are already an AT&T customer, you can choose to replace your old phone with the iPhone or even add a new line to your AT&T account. If you are a new AT&T customer, you can transfer (port) your old number to the iPhone or have a new number assigned to you.

Now we know why the iPhone is setup to require iTunes!
