Ecoweb, which is Zimbabwe’s largest ISP and a subsidiary of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, is working to deploy the first mobile WiMAX network in the country.
The company is already offering broadband data through fixed WiMAX, but the idea is to expand the market with the introduction of new technology. Moreover, they said that mobile WiMAX will complement their existing 3G/EDGE/GPRS services.
The deployment of Mobile WiMAX will take place in two phases. In the initial phase, which is already underway, Ecoweb will deploy 100 WiMAX base stations across the country, targeting the main business centers. Deployment of the service is planned to begin in the near future.
The second phase, on the other hand, will most probably (we’re not sure) include expansion to other areas and eventually further network enhancements.
Commenting on the announcement, Ecoweb’s General Manager, Mr Tororiro Isaac Chaza, said: “The Mobile WiMAX network will be capable of carrying mobile, nomadic and fixed services ranging from individual netbooks to large corporate networks. The technology is also suitable for use as backhaul for mobile networks.”
