MetroPCS has good quarter, adds 629,000 subscribers

MetroPCS quietly had a good first quarter and the prepaid carrier added 629,000 new subscribers, giving it a total of more than 7.3 million customers.

The company, which offers no-contract voice, data and texting services, has added more than 1.3 million subscribers over the last year. It has also seen its churn, the rate at which users leave for competitors, dip to 3.7% from 5% for the same period last year.

“With this strong customer response to our Wireless for All plans, our consolidated subscriber base grew dramatically: over 10% during the first quarter,” said Roger Linquist, CEO of MetroPCS, in a prepared statement. “Also, over the past 12 months, in the midst of a weak economy and an increasingly competitive landscape, we have grown subscriber base by over 21%.”

The company seems to be on track to have a strong year and it will be the first U.S. carrier to sport a handset capable on Long-Term Evolution 4G. But things aren’t all rosy, as Sprint has just made an aggressive play for the prepaid market. Sprint has strong brands with Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile and it also has a truly nationwide network. It will be fun to watch the prepaid wars play out.
