Why isn’t S60 as snappy as S40?

That seems to be the argument going on over on Howard Forums.

It’s a reasonable question too. The perception of a products snappiness is directly proportional to how quickly something changes on the screen after a user hits a button NOT how fast it takes a certain task to come to completion.

This is yet another thing that the S60 guys have to work on. Menu transitions between screen renders isn’t the answer either.

S60v3FP2 will be demoed at "An evening with S60," I’ll let you guys know if any improvements have been made.

Read one of Clayton Christensen’s books to get a proper answer. This is a common dilemma in tech development: integrated technology solutions (such as S40) provide better performance, but open horizontal technology platforms (such as S60) provide better flexibility etc. As the technology advances, the benefits in flexibility etc. will eventually outweigh the benefits in extra performance. When that happens exactly, depends on the preferences of the user.
