Alcatel-Lucent set the new data transfer record: More than 600 DVDs per second!

Alcatel-Lucent announced successful transmission of 25.6 Terabits per second (Tb/s) of optical data over a single fiber strand. That’s enough bandwidth to transmit the data from more 600 DVDs per second!

The new world record is set using using 160 Wavelength-Division Multiplexed (WDM) channels, thanks to the combined research teams from the United States and France. These results far surpass the previous transmission record of 14 Tb/s, established in September 2006.

I could go on and on, but that’s not the point here. If you’re interested to know the tech specs, you should consult the official release. I just want to add that we all want faster Internet connections on both land an mobile lines, and it’s good to see companies working on that. Gimmie, gimmie… 🙂
