Mobile Vlogging: Why not try FTP?

I was disappointed to see Symbian Guru’s post about his failure to mobile vlog.

Disappointed because there are currently no solutions on the market that would make this process a little less painful. I want to see him succeed so I did a little bit of research myself and I think I have a solution!

Blip.tv has uploading via FTP:

To upload to blip.tv with FTP, log into ftp.blip.tv with your username and password. When you upload make sure to use binary mode. Most FTP clients will do this for you.

Videos you upload with FTP will be posted to blip.tv as soon as you log out of your FTP session. The title of the post will be the name of the file you uploaded, without the file extension.

They also have this nice feature called cross posting:

Cross-posting is the process of sending a video to a blog or other Web site automatically. It’s usually done on blip.tv from the upload form where you can check off the sites you want your video to go to. You can also set up Automatic Cross-posting for videos you upload from your cell phone and by FTP.

This is great. We figured out that one should upload their file to blip’s ftp severs and then use the web form to enter in some text, click a check box to post to your blog and you’re done!

Wait a minute … there are no S60 3rd Edition FTP programs, however I did this Java application called MobyExplorer on Google. It is $15 and you get free upgrades too!

How well does it work? I’m going to try it right now!

You can send videos directly to Vox.com directly from Nokia’s Gallery appp. No software required. It works well except that Vox is not that great of a videoblogging solution and videos are limited to 50MB.

  • cybette

I was going to mention Vox as well. I don’t think the 50MB limit is that big a deal – it’s better than Shozu’s 4MB limit, and you really don’t want to be uploading anything more than 50MB from your phone anyway… although over WLAN it’s manageable. It’ll be nice if blip.tv comes up with an integrated solution though.

Roland: as you said 50 MB limit isn’t nice and the fact that you have to make yet another blog

Jari Laru: 4 MB is a joke when talking about video

cybette: blip has zero limits on file sizes

I’ve tried Vox and it’s just not what I’m looking for. I don’t need another blog. I simply need a media repository online, basically. Flickr does that well, and Blip.tv does, also.

ShoZu is a great application but when a 3 min video is 58MB, a 4MB limit is laughable.

There is a free java me app called padersyncftp
it’s not as nice as mobyexplorer and won’t work with all ftp sites but it is signed and it is free from the developers. They also have several more advanced apps that require payment. Mobyexplorer is the better option though.
