We’ve been expecting this for quite some time now, and T-Mobile’s finally pulled the trigger on the Samsung T639. The Samsung T639 passed through the FCC months ago, and reports indicated that the handset would launch in September. Well, T-Mobile has launched their first 3G handset ahead of its actual 3G network rollout. The Samsung T639′s quad-band GSM radio will be limited to strictly EDGE data speeds, as T-Mobile has yet to see government agencies vacate its 1700Mhz frequency spectrum.
We’re sure T-Mobile is just itching to roll out its WCDMA network on the 1700Mhz band, but they’ll just have to wait for the molasses-bureaucracy to do its thing. The launch of the Samsung T639 could be a hint to T-Mobile’s intent to roll out its 1700Mhz WCDMA network in the near future – in limited markets at least. We’ll keep an eye out for any further developments.
