Brief: New N95 8GB firmware, Flash Lite 3 enabled!

In Nokia

The search and gallery applications seem to be faster, themes are not as buggy, more details as Rafe and the community find them over at All About Symbian. Will users get an official changelog from Nokia (NYSE: NOK)? Nope.

Update: Ricky from Symbian Guru discovered that youtube works on the new firmware, youtube as in youtube.com, not a special version, but the same version you and I use on a daily basis!

Brief: Nokia E71 and E66 specifications leak *UPDATE*

By Stefan Constantinescu on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 at 8:28 AM PST
In Nokia

The Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71 is the successor to the Nokia E61/E62/E61i according to Russian based forum Mobile-Review. It will have a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, weigh 120 grams and be only 57 x 112 x 10 mm; a hell of a lot less wide than the E61i at 70 mm.

These rumors are made by Mobile Review moderator Badger who has a consistent track record of having high quality sources. No pictures have leaked yet, but we’re waiting. In other news he says the E65 successor is called the E66, has the same specs (GPS, HSDPA, 3.2 MP) and is apparently “ugly.” We’ll have to wait and see for ourselves, taste is highly subjective.

CES is coming up in less than a week, but don’t look forward to any groundbreaking mobile news there; Mobile World Congress in February is where you’re going to see the mobile motherload of news mutilate our minds and RSS readers around the world.

Update:  If the E71 is shrunk down to scale, then this is how big it would look like compared to the E61i. Photo is obviously a photoshop from Mobile Review user AvWijk:

Video: The Essay, about the future, brought to you by 3G

By Stefan Constantinescu on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 at 8:20 AM PST
In General

This video is too heart warming not to share. A little girl wrote an essay about the future during what feels like the 1930’s, she then proceeds to read it aloud. Her classmates laugh at her, her parents take her to a shrink, all because what she is saying during that time period sounds absolutely insane. Look where we are now, in 2008, and truly appreciate how far we’ve come:

Purple Labs Joins LiMo Foundation; Gives hope about its survival

By Dusan Belic on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 at 8:05 AM PST
In Announcements, Linux

Purple Labs Joins LiMo FoundationDon’t get me wrong – I’ve nothing against multiple mobile Linux distributions. It’s just that following its creation, we haven’t seen much coming out from LiMo Foundation’s doors. That being said, just when I though they’ve died, we received a news release from Purple Labs informing us they’ve joined the pact.

And while we still have our doubts they’ll be able to compete with Google (NSDQ: GOOG)-led Open Handset Alliance, it’s actually nice to hear these folks are still in business. Now when the France-based Purple Labs added its feature phone platform to the mix, I hope we’ll see first devices wearing the LiMo badge hitting the market. Mobile World Congress is coming and that may be the good opportunity to hear what these guys have to say about the market conditions today.

Anyway, if you care to know more, keep reading for the full release after the jump.

Mobile soap operas to hit India soon

Rajshri Media — also known as India’s number 1 broadband entertainment destination — is a company to watch for. They are aiming to reach all the mobile phone owners in the world’s fastest growing mobile marketplace who are looking for ways to entertain themselves while on-the-go.

Scheduled to launch by the end of January, the company will be rolling out the first ever 90-episode series of mobile soap opera. The experimental program is a comedic soap opera running for 3 minutes per episode, and in addition to mobile phone users, Rajshri Media will also target those using portable media players. If this ends up as a success, I’m sure we’ll see major Hollywood and Bollywood companies entering the market as well. In the meantime, Rajshri will be there, already well positioned. Good luck folks!

HTC Touch coming soon to T-Mobile UK as Touch Plus

Our Windows Mobile fans-readers on T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) UK will appreciate the fact that the carrier will be adding the HTC Touch to its offering soon. As always, the Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT) owned mobile operator will brand the HTC device their way, hence potential customers will be able to grab the Windows Mobile smartphone as T-Mobile Touch Plus. And in case you’re wondering, we’ve now idea whether T-Mobile will also launch the device in the States, even though the lack of 3G support makes the move quite logical. We’ll see…

Motorola launches Moto Z8 in Taiwan; We say – wait for the Z10

Moto Z8

Just before the New Year, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) announced a launch of its “multimedia monster” Z8 in Taiwan. As you’re probably already aware, the MOTORIZR Z8 is a Symbian UIQ 3.1 based smartphone that has that unique kicker-slider form factor.

Other specs include HSDPA support, 2.2″ QVGA display, stereo Bluetooth, 2 MP camera, media player and of course the microSD expansion slot. And everything would be cool, except that we’re eagerly waiting for the Z10 to officially show up, hence all I can say is wait for the Z8’s successor. It should be more polished and will sport a better 3.2 MP camera…

In Apple, Devices, Rumors, iPhone

iPhone firmware 1.1.3 to include Copy/Paste functionality? We’ve already wrote that the new iPhone firmware is coming. Heck we’ve even see the video demoing all — or some of — the new features. But apparently, there’s more coming…

According to MacScoop, Jobs&Co will unveil the new iPhone firmware during this year’s MacWorld Expo. The reports obtained claim the software update will among other things add Copy/Paste, which is one of the most requested features by iPhone users…

As always Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is quiet until the launch day and we can only pray there’s some truth in the reports. Now, Steve add the proper Bluetooth support, and I’m all yours. ;)

LG Viewty launched in India

In Devices, LG

LG Viewty

Not exactly the hot news, as LG unveiled the Viewty in the “world’s fastest growing mobile marketplace” just before the New Year. Still, it’s worth repeating just how LG is serious when it comes to its high-end device, and we already wrote they’re in the midst of launching Viewty in select Asian and African markets.

Our readers in India who are still not familiar with the Viewty, should know it’s the YouTube-enabled, DivX-certified device that also sports the 5 MP camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, media player and of course the microSD memory card slot. The Korean electronics maker is currently selling the Viewty for Rs. 21,900.
