As part of security measures for the independence day celebrations, Sri Lanka’s telecom networks blocked SMS for 12 hours.

According to the country’s official telecom regulator, the move comes out of fear that Tamil Tiger rebels could use SMS to scare people into staying away from celebrations. And the government, it seems, wants people to party… :)
