FIDO launching iPhone 3G on July 11Who says that Canada lacks a competitive GSM market? Fido, Canada’s traditionally overshadowed GSM network, is joining Rogers in bringing the Apple iPhone 3G to our friends up North.

Following on Rogers’ previous announcement that they’ll be launching the iPhone 3G on July 11th, Fido has just thrown their hat in to the mix with their own announcement detailing plans to offer the iPhone 3G, come July 11.

Canada’s No. 4 wireless carrier says that the iPhone 3G will be offered with the standard $199 and $299 price-tags for the 8GB and 16GB variants of the iPhone 3G, respectively. Of course, as is par for the course in Canada, Fido subscribers will be required to sign a 3-year contract. Perhaps Fido will offer more competitive data pricing for the iPhone 3G.

What? We can’t hope?

Fido is entirely owned by Rogers Communications in Canada and is widely seen as a subsidiary. Therefore I highly doubt there will be very much competition between the two companies as pricing structures are usually identical. Both the data and voice options are most probably going to be identical.

Same company, same prices, same crappy monopoly.

fido is to rogers what the smart car is to mercedes.

  • Big Surprise

Title of this article should be “Fido ordered by Rogers to be iPhone 3G carrier”. That sounds more like it! yay!

Rogers bought Fido, and Rogersified it.

I’ve been with Fido(matic) for 8-9 years. Then Rogers comes along to ‘innovate’. Whatever.

I keep a balance of atleast 60 bucks near always. A 3 year gulag term (contract) is NEVER gonna happen with my 3 Fido fone family ;-)

I thought walling people in proved to be counter-productive.

I want an iPhone probably more than any gadget I’ve ever seen. But, I WILL NOT be locked in.

What would I need to do when the iPhone ’3′ comes out. Pay out any punishment (penalty) on a 3 year contract. Or wait 24months before I can get a new one.

    No deal, Howie.
