IMS Research: Touchscreen handset shipments to exceed 230 million by 2012

With all the hype still surrounding the iPhone, it doesn’t surprises more and more people are looking towards buying themselves a touchscreen-equipped handset. IMS Research is here to prove that, saying that although there were fewer than 30 million touchscreen phones sold in 2007, it is expected that number will increase to over 230 million by 2012.

IMS ResearchAccording to the research company, there are numerous signs pointing that touchscreens are poised to significantly increase their presence in the handset market. Three of the largest mobile phone manufacturers have highlighted a trend in the increased production of phones using touch technology:

  • In July, LG revealed that it had sold seven million touchscreen handsets.
  • Samsung Instinct has become the best selling EV-DO device in the Sprint’s history just one week after the launch.
  • Then there’s Apple, which reported that it sold one million iPhone 3GS in just the first three days of its release.
  • Finally, Nokia is also serious when it comes to S60 Touch and we’re sure we’ll see them announcing some cool touchscreen handsets in the near future.
