TelstraClear, the New Zealand arm of Australian Telstra, is to re-enter the country’s mobile market by becoming an MVNO on New Zealand Telecom’s mobile network.

TelstraClear’s initial offering includes a free Nokia 6275i handset, with national calls to fixed-line and mobiles costing NZ$0.29 per minute and 500 texts to any network, for NZ$20 a month. Additionally, customers can also call a mobile or landline in the UK, the US, Australia, Ireland and Canada for NZ$0.40 a minute.

At the moment, the service is only available on a 24-month contract for customers that subscribe to the operator’s broadband and fixed-line packages, though TelstraClear’s Steve Jackson said that there could be potential in the future for a standalone mobile service. “Nothing’s ruled in – nothing’s ruled out,” he said.

TelstraClear had previously operated an MVNO using Vodafone New Zealand’s network, which was shut down in June 2007.
