Pwn your iPhone

As if you even had to ask. The iPhone Dev Team was apparently hard at work over the past few days hammering out a new version of their popular iPhone and iPhone 3G jailbreak solution – Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn. The iPhone 2.1 OS firmware was recently released to the iPhone community.

Touting security enhancements, stability improvements, less dropped calls, better battery management, speedier 3G data, and a fix to that over-hyped passcode security flaw, the new iPhone 2.1 OS is ready to bring your iPhone or iPhone 3G up to speed. But, many of you likely shunned the initial iPhone 2.1 OS release for the sake of preserving your iPhone 3G‘s older baseband radio that might someday be freed by the iPhone Dev Team to roam on any GSM network in the world. There’s no word on when, or even if, the iPhone 3G baseband unlock solution will hit streets in the near future, but there’s something to be said for playing it safe.

As such, the iPhone Dev Team has just released the latest version of Pwnage Tool that should get all iPhone and iPhone 3G users updated to the iPhone 2.1 OS with full jailbreak-application compatibility while holding on to the older baseband firmware.

If a quick jailbreak without a full-restore is more your style, then the iPhone Dev Team would like you to give QuickPwn 1.1 a whirl. Like it’s name might lead you to believe, the QuickPwn utility is a jailbreak utility that quickly “pwns” and jailbreaks your iPhone or iPhone 3G without the need to carry out a lengthy iPhone “Restore” process.

Pwnage Tool 2.1 and QuickPwn 1.1can be downloaded directly as a torrent file. Once the initial download rush subsides, the iPhone Dev Team will make the Pwnage Tool 2.1 and QuickPwn 1.1 update available through both applications’ integrated “software update” utilities. They’ll also post a direct download link on their website.

As always, Pwnage Tool will require that you have the latest iPhone OS firmware handy, so go ahead and download it before you get to the actual jailbreaking nitty-gritty.

And, the iPhone Dev Team has announced that it has endowed the Pwnage Tool 2.1 application with magical iTunes 8 workaround powers that doesn’t require any patches – which is fortunate because iPhone 2.1 OS requires iTunes 8 to work properly.

Quick note: If you’re downloading Pwnage Tool or QuickPwn directly, make sure you move the application to your desktop before double-clicking. Running either application directly from its image will cause problems, just don’t do it and you’ll be fine.
