Samsung has already proved it can make 5 megapixel phones with real optical zoom with their award-winning G810 model. At the same time, they showed us they can make 8 megapixel phones with the i8510 INNOV8 and Pixon. Now the challenge is to make a 8 megapixel cameraphone with optical zoom.

That shouldn’t be a problem, as Samsung Techwin and Samsung Electro-Mechanics have already developed 8 megapixel camera modules with 3x optical zoom. Apparently, the module has an autofocus performance improved by 57%, a 1/2.5-inch CMOS sensor and lens that support F2.85. It is expectedly a bit bigger than the 5MP module previously developed by Samsung.

As for the release date of first 8 megapixel cameraphone with optical zoom, Samsung said that the first such handset will be unveiled in early 2009, meaning we could expect to see it announced during CES or Mobile World Congress (3GSM).

But the news don’t stop there. Samsung also said it is working on a small 12 megapixel camera module. The release date of 12MP camera-equipped handset isn’t announced, though.

I'd prefer higher optical zoom over higher megapixels.
