According to new data from ABI Research, this year the value of mobile commerce transacted via non-NFC (non-Near Field Communication) methods will total $1.6 billion. At the same time, the research company suggested that the NFC-enabled mobile commerce will be minimal.

ABI ResearchABI argues that there are two main mobile commerce technology camps: NFC, and “the rest,” with latter consisting of such technologies as SMS, mobile Internet and mobile applications. The development of the NFC market has not met early expectations, and non-NFC platforms aim to fill this gap.

ABI Research’s practice director Dan Shey wonders how will the NFC market respond to mobile payment alternatives and get organized. In the meantime, an increasing number of handset users are shopping at mobile commerce site through the web browser on their mobile phones…

In its new study titled “Mobile Money Services and Contactless Payment Forecasts,” ABI Research provides a comprehensive view of mobile financial services, breaking the market into two segments: mobile financial services and mobile commerce. More information is available from their website.
