Data mining is a powerful tool. When applied to web traffic data, interesting trends start to emerge. And the latest trend seems to be cellphones. Go figure. Hitwise has come out with the latest web search trends that shows mobile phones as the most searched for consumer electronics across the web.
By looking at data from web searches for consumer electronics in the most recent week ending February 14, web traffic analysts at Hitwise have determined that 29.4% of all online searches for consumer electronics were searches for mobile phones, making cellphones the most popular type of web search.
Leading the pack of cellphone-related searches is none other than the Apple iPhone. Since the iPhone’s launch, it has apparently remained at or near the top of the list of most searched consumer electronics. The iPhone has only been temporarily overtaken by new “it” products like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. An impressive 1 in 12 mobile phone searches were related to the Apple iPhone.
Moreover, the list of Top 5 most-searched gadget brands is dominated by Apple, with Finnish phone-giant Nokia grabbing second place with half as many searches. The only other mobile phone maker to break into the Top 5 was Samsung. Still, it should be noted that Nokia was the only dedicated mobile phone vendor to break into the Top 5 list.
Consumers apparently have cellphones on the brain, and with the growing popularity of smartphones, we’re likely going to see an increase in interest in the mobile space.
