igf-iphoneThe iPhone trumps just about any other mobile gaming platform when it comes to bang-whiz graphics and gameplay. And, as yet another testament to the iPhone’s widely accepted role as a console-smashing gaming platform, the IGF Mobile Games Awards has given out just about every single award to an iPhone gaming title.

The Independent Games Festival is in its 11th year and coincided with the Game Developers Conference 2009 in San Francisco this year. Independent game developers have proven to be especially smitten with the iPhone and iPod Touch as mobile gaming platforms. This year marked the second year that IGF has given out awards for mobile game titles, and the iPhone ran an almost clean sweep of the awards show. In just about every gaming category, the winner was an iPhone gaming title available through the AppStore.

Here’s a breakdown of how the iPhone swept the IGF Mobile Games Awards:

  • IGF Best Mobile Game, IGF Achievement in Art – Fieldrunners ($2.99 in AppStore)
  • IGF Best iPhone Game, IGF Audio Achievement – SecretExit ($4.99 in AppStore)
  • IGF Innovation in Mobile Game Design – Galcon ($2.99 in AppStore)
  • IGF Technical Achievement – “Real Racing” (not yet available in AppStore)

The only category where the iPhone didn’t clean up was “The Next Great Mobile Game.” That category was won by Reflection for the Nintendo DS. Interestingly, every category saw multiple iPhone games duking it out for an award.
