Now I wrote about 118800 before (here) – in simple terms though, it’s a new directory company, whose directory consists of mobile numbers they bought from various sources – meaning, in simple terms, that if you are in the UK and have a mobile number, it’s quite likely you could be found (or at least your details) via this service…
… since the launch, a lot of people have apparently being removing themselves from the service – us in the UK are none too keen on privacy invasion you see – or at least the perception of it. Now the service has been suspended, due to what are issues that were apparently unforeseen at launch.
Quite what the future of the site/service might be I don’t know – but one thing is for sure – addressing peoples’ concerns about how their data (especially that which they believe they never explicitly permitted to be distributed from its original source) is used has got to be right up there on the list of priorities…
Ben is a 10+ year veteran of the Mobile industry – starting his career
when SMS was a still a relatively new concept for most people (!), he has
now consulted on everything from bleeding-edge Mobile content, to the
next-gen accessories you might view it on. As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas!
He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently
became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years
when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to
'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make
your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device)
isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question
of why you continue to use it...
His focus at IntoMobile is mainly on Mobile content, services, and
infrastructure, particularly as regards the UK market – and with the
occasional look at devices. Additionally, using his extensive experience
in the industry, he will provide commentary on the industry at large, with
regular (and hopefully thought-provoking) articles.

Hi Ben,
Joe from 118800.co.uk here.
First of all, thanks for writing about us. We can understand peoples’ concerns over privacy – as it’s such a new concept. But again, by way of reassurance, we’ll never actually give out anyone’s personal details. When you search on 118800.co.uk, we’ll send an SMS message to the person you’re looking for, giving them your contact details – and it’s up to them to call you back.
Our service on 118 800 and 118800.co.uk was being tested in June. There are now developments we want to make to improve the service for our customers. But due to the high levels of enquiries we are getting, we are simply not able to complete the technical work required whilst the service is live. We are sorry for inconvenience and will be up and running again as soon as possible.
We’re genuinely interested in getting peoples’ feedback so that we can shape the service to make sure people are comfortable with it, and for it to be as useful and reliable as possible. We’re asking anyone with concerns to get in touch be emailing us on contact@118800.co.uk
