The Palm Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes has always been controversial. Yes, software has been invented that will let you sync your non Apple device to iTunes, but the Palm Pre was the first device to actually tell iTunes that it is an iPod and bypass the need to install a third party application just to break into the Apple ecosystem. It seemed too good to be true, and today Apple released an updated iTunes, version 8.2.1, that “addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.” In other words, no more syncing your Palm Pre with iTunes. Let the corporate bitch slapping begin.

What do I think of all this? I’m a mix of old and new school. I manage my collection of pirated MP3s by having a folder structure setup as \\Artist\Album\ and use Spotify to manage one huge playlist that I call “shit I like.” I refuse to install iTunes and I’ve been using WinAMP as my music player of choice since the day I went over to my friend’s house after school and he taught me about music piracy.

Like Google using a “free” OS to in an anti-competitive move to generate ad revenue, Apple uses iTunes to dominate the phone and mp3 markets. Can you imagine the uproar if Microsoft did this?

Apple not only controls their markets, they own them.

FTC – are you listening? Unless you have an iPod or an iPhone, guess not.
