I have noticed that when I am home (downtown Santa Barbara) I get 3g on my G1… however, when I am uptown at my office around upper State street & La Cumbre its back to the lame Edge only coverage. I hope this phases itself out soon.

They apparently have one node operational in downtown Santa Barbara. Let’s them claim a 3G presence but pretty lame.

Last Evening I drove to downtown Santa Barbara just to see if there was any 3G. There was not. I recognize the 3G icon on my G1 as I have seen it in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It has popped up no where so far for me either in the core downtown or the outskirts of Santa Barbara. Maybe the other people happened to catch 3G during T-Mobile testing?

Suddenly this evening I have 3G both in downtown Santa Barbara and on the outlying hills. T-Mobile still does not indicate this on their coverage map but it looks like it is on its way.

I haven’t had 3g in over a week anywhere in Santa Barbara… It disappeared suddenly, this is beyond annoying.

Since I got the new G2 phone that is HSPA+ ready, I decided to take a drive down the 101 between downtown Santa Barbara and Goleta, continually testing my bandwidth with the speedtest.net app the whole way. Sadly I never even got over 1mbps download. I’ve done the drive a few times now. I’ve gotten speeds ranging from 0.1mpbs – 0.98mbps. I’d say the average is about 0.5 mbps DL. After doing some research, apparently 1.17mbps is supposed to be the minimum data rate for 3G while driving. You really disappoint me T-Mobile!
