Nokia has just announced a new version of the 13 month old 5800, the new Navigation Edition, and it will go on sale in the USA immediately for $299 at nokiausa.com and various other online shops. Way down, at the very bottom of the press release, they sneak in this nugget of gold: “Through December 31, Nokia is offering a 50 USD Visa prepaid gift card for customers who buy the device and activate an account with Ovi Store, Nokia’s marketplace for mobile applications, videos, games and more.” That’s right, Nokia will give you $50 to sign up for Ovi. What makes the Navigation Edition different from the regular 5800? It has a lifetime license for navigation, which is probably in response to Google’s Navigation application, free for all USA Android 1.6 and 2.0 devices, and it comes with a car kit. In total you’re looking at $250 for a mobile GPS unit that can also make phone calls, send text messages, and browse the internet. That’s a bloody steal if you ask me.
