Vodafone UK has relased some PR to talk about it’s new(ly branded) SureSignal product, which is a Femtocell that plugs in to your broadband connection, and backhauls your mobile connection over the InterWeb. Why would you want to do that? Well maybe you have a poor signal in your house for example – that would be a perfect reason!

Vodafone UK customers can now have the Vodafone Sure Signal, the small plug-in box that significantly improves mobile phone signal in their homes and small offices for just £50.
Quick and easy to install, plugging straight into any home or office broadband line with a download speed of at least 1 MB per second, Vodafone Sure Signal brings customers better and more reliable 3G coverage indoors and works with all 3G handsets. Customers no longer need to worry about missed calls on their mobiles due to inconsistent indoor coverage and will be able to take advantage of the full range of Vodafone services via their handset anywhere in the home or office.
“No other network in the UK can ensure a great mobile phone signal in the home, because the Sure Signal is unique to Vodafone,” says Guy Laurence, Vodafone UK CEO. “Customers tell us it is life changing. If they live or work in a basement for example, the only way they may be able to get consistent mobile coverage could be with a Vodafone Sure Signal.”
Up to 32 people can be registered to use a Vodafone Sure Signal and four people can use it at any one time. Customers can now add or change their Sure Signal users in real-time with Vodafone’s new online service.
Pricing information – Consumer Customers:
£50 one-off cost (or £5 a month for 12 months) for price plans of £25 or more
£120 one-off cost (or £5 a month for 24 months) for price plans of less than £25
Pricing information – Small Business Customers: Prices ex VAT
£42.56 one-off cost (or £4.26 a month for 12 months) for new or existing customers on Your Plan for Small Business and Storm price plans of £21.26 or more

Vodafone Sure Signal is available at www.vodafone.co.uk/suresignal for individual customers, www.vodafone.co.uk/businesssuresignal for small business customers and by visiting your local Vodafone store.

In case you were wondering about the pricing:

Consumer Customers:

  • £50 one-off cost (or £5 a month for 12 months) for price plans of £25 or more
  • £120 one-off cost (or £5 a month for 24 months) for price plans of less than £25

Small Business Customers: Prices ex VAT

  • £42.56 one-off cost (or £4.26 a month for 12 months) for new or existing customers on Your Plan for Small Business and Storm price plans of £21.26 or more
  • £102 one-off cost (or £4.26 a month for 24 months) for new or existing customers on Your Plan for Small Business and Storm price plans of less than £21.26

Overall I think it’s a great idea – I just wish O2 did something similar, as I seem to live in an area whereby going indoors causes constant flicking between 2G and 3G – meaning I rarely get a good signal! Oh well, hopefully with time these sorts of useful ‘booster’ products will roll out across all Operators…

Vodafone Sure Signal is available here for individual customers, and here for small business customers and by visiting your local Vodafone store :-)

Vodafone is really pumping a load of money into advertising this too!

However, I must add that this is the exact same decide as the Home Access Gateway they released last summer. It’s the same Sagem made box, but they’ve cut the price, found a sexier name for it and made it easier to set up numbers that can use it (or not) via the web.

I’m surprised no other network has released one yet, especially considering O2 was one of the first to do trials. I can say (as a Home Access Gateway/Sure Signal owner) that they really do work very well indeed – if you’ve got a reliable broadband connection at least!
