The Weather Channel is really doing all it can to promote its Android app. The company is currently running an on-air bar code (QR Code) that can be scanned by an Android-powered device for instant download of The Weather Channel App. As far as I know, this is the first broadcast outlet to do this (please correct me if I’m wrong!). The QR code appears at 20 after the hour following these shows: Day Planner, PM Edition and WeatherCenter late.

The Weather Channel app for Android is ranked as the number 1 weather app in the App Market, and it looks like TWC wants to keep it that way. For a look at how The Weather Channel is implementing the QR code, check out the video above.

Saw this for the first time yesterday…Very cool!

But you know that advertisers will use this within commercials and regular shows to push their products — the equivalent to Little Orphan Annie’s secret decoder ring.
